But Asoka doesn’t just serve food; it creates unforgettable experiences. The kitchen stays open until midnight, recognising that a night on the dance floor can work up an appetite. They are open for breakfast and lunch but also offer a weekly chef’s table for dinner which I am super keen to try. This place is not only great for a catch up with your girlfriends but also if you want to work away a few hours on your laptop while sitting amongst the cool kids. They do have a lot of great options by the glass but you can also stock up for the fridge here. In addition, they offer a few tapas and nibbles including an amazing cheese and charcuterie platter with offerings from a few local favorites.
It ain’t hip and happening but there are some great grilled fish options on the menu with more unusual dishes like chili con pesce and classics chicken livers and springbok carpaccio. It is a tiny road but really packs a punch when it comes to restaurant density and variety of cuisines. The interior is clean and modern but still works in the old Kloof Street house and on a wind-free evening you can sit on the small patio in front.
People in Cape Town go gaga over Kloof Street House while I think it is a tad bit overhyped. The waitstaff is incredibly hip and quite aloof at times and the whole place is just very … busy. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I think it wants to be both a bar and a restaurant, a concept that can be slightly overwhelming at times. Carne has two locations in town but my personal favorite is the Kloof Street restaurant. It has a unique neighborhood feel and is not often frequented by tourists, which I find appealing.
